Why Is My Spacing All Messed Up With Word

Sometimes it seems like spacing in word is all messed up.  No matter what I style setting I give text I can’t make it go to the next line.  The one thing that you need to remember is that there are two types of returns in word processor programs.  There is the hard (paragraph) return and the soft (word wrap) return.  The paragraph return is activated when you press the Enter or Return key.  This is used to signify the end of a paragraph.  The soft return is usually invoked by your word processor when it reaches the end of the line and wraps to the next line.  In most word processors there is a way to manually add a soft return.

In Microsoft Word you hold down the shift key while you are pressing the enter key.  This will advance your cursor to the next line without adding the space of a new paragraph.  Incidentally if you hold down the control key when you press enter you will jump down one full page.
