What Is Copying?

One the computer the copy command is used in every program that exists so you know it won’t be time wasted learning this command. Learning to use this tool effectively will save you time and eliminate data entry errors. Copying allows you to make an exact duplication of an object or a group of objects. An object can be anything; a word, a resume, a picture, a group of words and so on.

Copying Sounds Cool, How Do I Do It?

There are many different ways that you can invoke the copy command and depending on the program and computer system ( mac or pc). The most efficient way to copy something is a combination of using the mouse pointer to select your object(s) with one hand and using the copy command shortcut

Control + c for pc and linux

and

Command + c for mac users

I believe it is still important to learn other ways to copy because you might not have a working mouse at a critical moment or your “c key” could be broken and most of all the more exposure you get to performing efficiency tasks the better you become at finding shortcuts in all the programs you use or will use in the future.

Sometimes it seems like spacing in word is all messed up. No matter what I style setting I give text I can’t make it go to the next line. The one thing that you need to remember is that there are two types of returns in word processor programs. There is the hard (paragraph) return and the soft (word wrap) return. The paragraph return is activated when you press the Enter or Return key. This is used to signify the end of a paragraph. The soft return is usually invoked by your word processor when it reaches the end of the line and wraps to the next line. In most word processors there is a way to manually add a soft return.

In Microsoft Word you hold down the shift key while you are pressing the enter key. This will advance your cursor to the next line without adding the space of a new paragraph. Incidentally if you hold down the control key when you press enter you will jump down one full page.

Ever wanted to to permantely remove a file without sending it to the recycle bin?

If you are answering yes to this question then the following warning is for you.

Warning: The following computer tip can cause permanent disappearance of files off of your computer. Always take extra care when performing this computer tip

Having removed myself from any liability I will continue on with this tip. If you are a moderately confident computer user who knows enough information to get yourself into trouble then you probably look at the recycle bin as an extra fail safe when deleting files. I know that it has saved me on more than one occasion but more and more lately I find myself finding files in my recycle bin that I have already sorted on a folder and wanted them gone, permanently.

For example, I take a lot of digital photos and usually dump them all to my computer and then sort them there because it is faster. So when I am deleting a blurry uncompressed tiff that is 20 megs I don’t want want to find it in the recycle bin a month later when I am cleaning it out. It means I have to do things twice and when I need to look in the recycle bin for a file I don’t want to have to be searching through the files I have already have deleted.

The easiest way to deal with this file the first time is to hold down the shift key when you press the delete key and that will bypass the recycle bin and permantly delete the file from your system. You will still get a message box popping up that will ask if you want to delete this file instead of the usual message that asks if you want to send this file to the recycle bin.
